Download MyLexia iPhone App Helps Struggling Students

Lexia has released a new iOS app that is allegedly the industry’s first to provide real-time student skills data and norm-referenced performances measures. It’s called MyLexia, and it’s immediately available from the Apple App Store

MyLexia uses the Assessment Without Testing technology, which allows teachers and administrators have actionable performance data at the point of instruction, according to the makers of the app.

Lexia strongly believes that “Data-driven instruction is one of the cornerstones of today’s instructional methodologies. However, until now, accessing such data has typically required educators to repeatedly print volumes of progress reports or remain tied to the computer, making the use of real-time data during instruction nearly impossible,” the firm says.

The purpose of the app is to helps teachers quickly identify students that are struggling, in order to group them by specific skills for individual or small group instruction.

The software even tells teachers when students have earned a certificate or achievement. The document can be emailed to their parents or beamed to a wireless printer right from the app.

“Mobile access to real-time data allows teachers to clear obstacles for students as they occur,” said Lexia CEO Nick Gaehde. “With the power of Lexia’s Assessment Without Testing technology in the palm of their hand, teachers can identify and address skill gaps without interrupting the flow of instruction.”

Gaehde upholds that teachers many times fail to get their message across the class from behind their desk, while admins hardly make any changes by sitting in their office behind a closed door.

“The MyLexia App provides access to student data anytime, anywhere, allowing data-driven instructional decisions to happen at the point of instruction,” he said.

As part of Lexia’s Reading suite, the MyLexia app is available for free via the link below. It requires an active subscription to the Lexia Reading software.

Uninstall Unused Programs
Pretty much everyone who uses their computer on a regular basis will have programs on their computer which they simply don’t use. Having programs on your computer which you don’t use means that you are putting unnecessary strain on your computer for no reason that benefits you whatsoever.

The fix this, all you have to do is uninstall any programs which you don’t use by using the instructions below:
Click Start, then click Control Panel. When the control panel screen appears, click Uninstall a Program. You will now see a list of the programs which are installed on your computer.

Now you should click any program name which you feel you don’t use or need, and then click Uninstall.
Now you will be promoted to an uninstall screen, and all you have to do from here is follow the instructions which are shown to you by the uninstaller.

Repeat this process for all and any programs you don’t use or need.

Delete Unused Files
This is really simple, and can be really effective. No doubt you will have files such as pictures, music, or videos on your computer which you know yourself you probably will never look/listen to again.
Having too many files on your computers hard drive can cause your computer to slow down due to the limited memory it can work with.

To delete unused files, all you have to do is go to your documents or desktop and find files you wont have any use for, and that are worthy of deletion.

Right click, and click Delete to fully remove the file, and free space.

Closing Task Tray Programs
More often than not, you will have programs running on your computer when you don’t even know it! Programs which are running in your task tray will still be causing speed decreases of your computer even if you aren’t actually properly using the program!

You should close all programs which are running in your task tray which you are not using.
Closing programs which you are not using in your task tray is unbelievably simple.

Simply goto the bottom right of your screen, right click, and close any programs which you are not using.
Although these methods of making your computer running Windows 7 faster may seem too simple, you would be surprised to how much they actually affect the performance of your computer!

If you still see no change in the speed of your computer after using these methods, then it’s probably because your computer simply can’t handle all that you want it to do, and that it’s time for you to upgrade to a more powerful computer.

Eating Walnuts Reduce Breast Cancer Risk

A recent study performed on mice by the researchers at Marshall University showed that, when a modest amount of walnuts is included in the regular diet, this can reduce the risk of breast cancer.

The report in the journal Nutrition and Cancer states that the amount of walnut in the test diet equates to about 2 ounces a day for humans

It looks like including walnuts in the diet decreased the risk of breast cancer at up to half the rate. Also, the number of tumors and their sizes were significantly smaller. These changes came even after mice were genetically mutated to develop cancer.
walnuts,healthy diet,Marshall University,Study,cancer,Reduce Breast Cancer Risk
When healthy fats were added to the subjects’ diet, unhealthy fats were removed, which made researchers unsure whether it was the addition of healthy fats, the reduction of the unhealthy fats, or even both.

“These reductions are particularly important when you consider that the mice were genetically programmed to develop cancer at a high rate,” said Elaine Hardman, Ph.D., of Marshall’s Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine, who led the study. “We were able to reduce the risk for cancer even in the presence of a preexisting genetic mutation.”

Study results also showed that a diet rich in walnuts changed the activity of multiple genes that are relevant to breast cancer in both mice and humans. Other testing showed that increases in omega 3 fatty acids did not fully account for the anti-cancer effect, and found that tumor growth decreased when dietary vitamin E increased.

Food is important medicine in our diet,” continued Hardman. “What we put into our bodies makes a big difference – it determines how the body functions, our reaction to illness and health. The simple stuff really works: eat right, get off the couch, and turn off the TV.

“The results of this study indicate that increased consumption of walnut could be part of a healthy diet and reduce risk for cancer in future generations,” she added.

Windows 8 vs Windows 7 - Boot Performance Comparison

The winner of the first Windows 8 vs. Windows 7 boot performance measuring contest is clear, and I doubt that we’ll ever see a comeback from Windows Vista’s successor in future comparisons.

An important aspect of Windows 8’s evolution is the fine tuning of the start-up process. Technologies such as solid state drive (SSDs) and Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI) aside, the next iteration of Windows comes with optimizations which will let Windows 7 in its boot dust.

Featuring a new start-up mechanism which combines cold boot with resuming from hibernate, Windows 8 delivers unmatched speed, drastically reducing the time it takes toreach Metro-ready or desktop-ready.

The next version of Windows closes user sessions on shutdown, but makes sure to hibernate the kernel session.

Only a small portion of memory is actually written to disk, it’s what the Redmond company calls, session 0 hibernation, as opposed to full hibernation.

“If you’re not familiar with hibernation, we’re effectively saving the system state and memory contents to a file on disk (hiberfil.sys) and then reading that back in on resume and restoring contents back to memory,” explained Gabe Aul, a director of program management in Windows.

“Using this technique with boot gives us a significant advantage for boot times, since reading the hiberfile in and reinitializing drivers is much faster on most systems (30-70% faster on most systems we’ve tested).”

The two graphics included with this article, courtesy of Microsoft, reveal the comparison between the new Windows 8 start boot and the old Windows 7 cold boot.

Windows 8 fast boot
It’s rather obvious, that no matter the actual device customers will be running, it will deliver superior boot performance if it’s running Windows 8 as opposed to Windows 7.

“It’s faster because resuming the hibernated system session is comparatively less work than doing a full system initialization, but it’s also faster because we added a new multi-phase resume capability, which is able to use all of the cores in a multi-core system in parallel, to split the work of reading from the hiberfile and decompressing the contents,” Aul added.

Users can watch a video of Windows 8 booting on an EliteBook 8640p (Intel Core i7-2620M, 8GB, 160GB SSD) in just 8 seconds below.

Diesel Hybrid Cars Poised for Growth in Europe

The near future sounds cleaner for Europe, as researchers from Frost & Sullivan have come up with the conclusion that diesel hybridization is the key of meeting 2020 targets of 95g/km of CO2 emissions.

The study highlights the fact that, despite of higher initial costs, diesel hybrid vehicles bring better performance, lower CO2 emissions and improved fuel efficiency.
This way, CO2 fleet average of cars in the European Union will also be reduced.
“European car manufacturers have adopted different strategies to reduce PM and NOx emissions, and one of those adopted is engine downsizing,” stated Bharath Kumar Srinivasan, Research Analyst at Frost & Sullivan. “However, downsizing a diesel engine will result in higher NOx emissions.”

World’s first series produced diesel-hybrid was just introduced by Peugeot in the form of the 3008 Hybrid4 with 200 bhp and CO2 emission as low as 99 g/km.

The diesel powertrain produces a power output of 163 bhp and the electric motor generates an additional 37 bhp. Both powertrains are capable of running independently, which means it can run in the all-electric mode within cities and thus being a zero-emission vehicle.

However, the higher costs of the technologies involved in a diesel hybrid, like the Hybrid4 technology, have been a key limitation to the launch of diesel hybrids. This could mean that attractive packaging should come into play.

“PSA has managed to combine the best of technologies into a single package,” Srinivasan explains.

One solution would be automotive alliances between producers with a strong diesel portfolio, such as Fiat, PSA, Renault, Volkswagen. This would lower the development costs and provide for a better deployment of vehicles.

Take, for example, PSA's cooperation with BMW for hybrid components and the BMW-Daimler-GM joint development of the two-mode hybrid.

The researchers also highlight the idea that the demand for diesel hybrids is set to grow to more than 300,000 units only by 2016-17.

Mango for Dell Venue Pro Coming Soon, Unlocked Devices First

Soon, Dell's Venue Pro users will be able to download and install a new OS flavor on their devices, and the company has just delivered some info on how the update is supposed to go down.

Windows Phone Mango, the next flavor of Microsoft's mobile operating system, is set to start arriving on existing devices in the next two weeks or so, and both carriers and handset vendors are making the final preparations for the event.

Among them, Dell was the one to announce that the new update will arrive on all of their Venue Pro devices in the U.S., EMEA and India, and that the unlocked flavors of the mobile phone will receive it first.
Dell Venue Pro,Windows Phone,Mango,software update,update schedule

Make no mistake about it, the carrier-branded devices will also be upgraded, only that this might happen a little later.

“Here’s what I can say at this point: later this fall, we will be supporting Mango for customers in the U.S., EMEA and India with unlocked versions of the Venue Pro,” Lionel Menchaca, chief blogger, Dell, notes.

“We will also support the Mango upgrade for those with T-Mobile, Cincinnati Bell Wireless locked versions of the phone.”

For the time being, no specific info on when the update might arrive on AT&T-locked devices has been unveiled, though all the necessary details are expected to become available in the near future.

Microsoft's Eric Hautala has just announced that the Mango update will arrive on devices in a week or two, and that it will also include software specific to each and every handset. This is why the AT&T flavor of Venue Pro will receive the update later.

“When I confirm definitive plans here, I will provide an update,” Menchaca continues.

Microsoft’s Windows Phone 7.5 (Mango) OS will arrive on all unlocked Dell Venue Pro units, as well as on the handsets available at T-Mobile and Cincinnati Bell via the Zune update process.

The update process will be similar with the one that users had to get through with the NoDo update, Menchaca concluded.

Flaw in iPhone 5 Touch-Panels to Affect Shipments - Report

Sources in the iPhone supply chain are reporting that Apple-partner Wintek is experiencing troubles with the touch-panels destined for the iPhone 5, a drawback that may affect the initial shipment.

Described as a “delayed bubble” by iPhone supply chain makers, the defect is hard to notice before it’s already too late. It generally shows up only after the lamination process of the touch panels, according to Digitimes.

However, the negative impact of this discovery is expected to be minimal. The reason basically has to do with the fact that the manufacturing process is identical to the one used for making iPhone 4 panels.

Wintek is expected to eliminate the flaw quickly, according to the sources cited in by the Taiwanese publication.

Another reason why the iPhone 5 will experience only minimal shipment constraints is Apple’s choice to have multiple suppliers for a single iPhone part.

iPhone digitizer
In the case of the iPhone touch panels, Wintek accounts for only 20-25 percent of the total production, the sources said.

Taiwan-based TPK Holding produces a substantial 60-65 percent of the panels used in Apple’s iPhone 5. Chimei Innolux makes up for the remainder.

Finally, the sources said that Apple has a target shipment of 25-26 million units of iPhone 5 in the fourth quarter.

Revealed earlier this week by All Things D, Apple is said to be preparing for an October 4 event for the launch of the fifth-generation iPhone.

The event, if confirmed, will also witness the introduction of iCloud (Apple’s replacement service for MobileMe), and iOS 5, the latest version of the mobile operating system powering iPhones, iPads, and iPod touch players.

Analysts and pundits alike expect the Cupertino, California technology giant to introduce not one, but two different iPhone models this time around, including one iPhone 4S that reportedly caters to the mid-tier customer base.

Mac OS X 10.7.2 Final Release ImminentMac OS X 10.7.2 Final Release Imminent

Apple has rolled out a new beta of OS X 10.7.2 to developers with a clear indication that this new build is likely to become the final shipping version of Lion’s second software update for end customers.

Listing no changes to the list of focus areas (AddressBook, GraphicsDrivers, iCal, iChat, iCloud, Mac App Store, Mail, MobileMe, Safari, Spotlight, and Time Machine) as well as no known issues, Lion Build 11C62 appears to be final, going by the seed notes.

According to those who are familiar with the build, Apple has posted the following release notes for Mac OS X 10.7.2 (courtesy of MacRumors):

The 10.7.2 update is recommended for all OS X Lion users and includes general operating system fixes that improve the stability, compatibility, and security of your Mac. It also includes support for iCloud, a breakthrough set of free cloud services that automatically and wirelessly store your content on iCloud and push it to all of your devices. iCloud on OS X Lion includes the following features:

 • iCloud stores your email, calendars, contacts, Safari bookmarks, and Safari Reading List and automatically pushes them to all your devices.
 • Back to My Mac provides remote access to your Mac from another Mac anywhere on the Internet.
 • Find My Mac helps find a missing Mac by locating it on a map and allows you to remotely lock the Mac or wipe all its data.

Getting started with iCloud is easy. After installing the update, OS X will automatically present an iCloud setup panel. Simply enter an existing Apple ID or create a new one and then follow the on screen instructions. To learn more about iCloud visit http://www.apple.com/icloud.

The 10.7.2 update also includes Safari 5.1.1 as well as fixes that:

For detailed information on this update, please visit this website: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4767.
For information on the security content of this update, please visit: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1222.

As readers will notice, the Support links included by Apple are not yet functional (save for the one detailing the security content of the update, as that Support document only gets modified, never replaced).

This OS X 10.7.2 beta delivers a new version of Safari (as the seed notes show) and comes with iCloud integration, marking the second time a Lion seed includes Apple’s Internet suite as a built-in component, rather than a separate download.

Developers enrolled with Apple’s programs can access the Mac Dev Center to download the latest Lion beta.

An Apple press event is rumored to go live October 4, when the company will reportedly launch its fifth-generation iPhone, alongside iOS 5 and iCloud (both of which have already been scheduled for launch this fall).

Since the launch of iCloud and iOS 5 is imminent this fall, expect Mac OS X 10.7.2 to drop very soon (especially given the nature of the new seed note format).

Windows 8 PCs with UEFI Secure Boot Could Lock Linux Out
Although he acknowledges that there’s nothing to panic about yet, Matthew Garrett, mobile Linux developer at Red Hat, posted a blog post designed to raise some concerns over the possibility that Linux might be locked out from Windows 8 PCs because of the new UEFI secure boot feature.

One of the new security mitigations introduced into Windows 8 involves bulletproofing the startup process, in an effort to fend off threats such as rootkits, and similar malware.

This is done by only loading components that are correctly signed by Microsoft as Windows 8 is booting.

Here is how Microsoft details the secured boot feature of the next major iteration of Windows:

“Secured boot stops malware in its tracks and makes Windows 8 significantly more resistant to low-level attacks. Even when a virus has made it onto your PC, Windows will authenticate boot components to prevent any attempt to start malware before the operating system is up and running.

“If the component isn’t correctly signed by Microsoft, Windows will begin remediation and start the Windows Recovery Environment, which will automatically try to fix your operating system.”

Secure boot is an aspect of the evolution of the Unified Extensible Firmware Interface, involving the integration of signing keys directly into the system firmware.

Code running on a machine with UEFI secure boot will need to also be signed with the same keys as the system firmware by the manufacturer of the computer.

According to Garrett, Microsoft considers secure boot enabled by default as a requirement of the logo program for Windows 8 PCs.

“The two alternatives here are for Windows to be signed with a Microsoft key and for the public part of that key to be included with all systems, or alternatively for each OEM to include their own key and sign the pre-installed versions of Windows,” he notes.

“The second approach would make it impossible to run boxed copies of Windows on Windows logo hardware, and also impossible to install new versions of Windows unless your OEM provided a new signed copy. The former seems more likely.”

Garrett stresses that a logoed OEM Windows 8 PC with UEFI secure boot will not boot generic copies of Linux, and there are a dime a dozen of those.

While Linux distributors could just as well sign their versions of the operating system, the very licensing of the platform creates some issues. Bootloaders under GPLv3 and GPLv2 simply won’t do, because the licenses imply that the vendors share the signing keys.

With OS kernels becoming part of the bootloader, they’ll also need to be signed. And even in the eventuality that devs sign their own code, they still need to work with manufacturers to have the keys included into the system firmware.

“There's no indication that Microsoft will prevent vendors from providing firmware support for disabling this feature and running unsigned code. However, experience indicates that many firmware vendors and OEMs are interested in providing only the minimum of firmware functionality required for their market. It's almost certainly the case that some systems will ship with the option of disabling this. Equally, it's almost certainly the case that some systems won't,” Garrett added.

Personally, I don’t think that Windows 8 PCs with UEFI secure boot will block users from installing, booting or running any operating system thy want, including Linux.

I welcome the new bulletproofed boot process of Windows 8 and I think that it will have a great impact on increasing the level of security for end users. At the same time, I’m confident that Linux will still continue to boot on new computers worldwide even after Windows 8 is launched.

Download Adobe Flash Player 10.3.183.10 for Mac OS X

Adobe Systems Inc. have issued a new version of their popular Flash Player, informing users that updating is imperative as the platform is suffering from a number of flaws that may end up with hackers taking control of the affected system.

Adobe categorizes the update as “critical”, and recommends that users update their installations to the newest versions at once. And here’s why.

According to the Photoshop-maker, Adobe Flash Player 10.3.183.7 and earlier versions for Macintosh, Windows, Linux and Solaris operating systems have “critical vulnerabilities [that] could cause a crash and potentially allow an attacker to take control of the affected system.”

On Android-powered devices, Adobe Flash Player 10.3.186.6 and earlier versions are also affected.

Adobe did some research and discovered that “There are reports that one of these vulnerabilities (CVE-2011-2444) is being exploited in the wild in active targeted attacks designed to trick the user into clicking on a malicious link delivered in an email message.”

Hence their decision to label the issue as “critical”.

“This universal cross-site scripting issue could be used to take actions on a user's behalf on any website or webmail provider if the user visits a malicious website,” the company adds.

The natural resolution, of course, is to update to the latest version of Flash. Adobe breaks it down by platform in the lines to follow:

“Adobe recommends users of Adobe Flash Player 10.3.183.7 and earlier versions for Windows, Macintosh, Linux and Solaris update to Adobe Flash Player 10.3.183.10,” reads their security bulletin.

“Users of Adobe Flash Player for Android 10.3.186.6 and earlier versions should update to Adobe Flash Player for Android 10.3.186.7,” Adobe outlines.

Mac users can grab the latest Flash version using the link below.

New Steve Jobs Book Announced, Launches this Fall

Agate Publishing of Evanston, Ill., has worked up this 160-page book chock full of Steve Jobs quotes and they plan to release it this November, about the same time Walter Isaacson’s official Steve Jobs biography comes out.

Featuring quotations sourced from various interviews, public appearances and writings during his time with Apple and away from Apple, "I, Steve: Steve Jobs In His Own Words" is considered to be a companion to Isaacson's bio, Doug Seibold, Agate's publisher, said.

"I very much see the book as an homage to Steve Jobs," said Seibold, according to ABC News, "and what really drew me to the project was the realization that Jobs is indisputably the most remarkable business figure of the past three decades, and that there was real value in collecting his public statements for the sake of all those people who will find insight and inspiration in them."

The report doesn’t say much else about the book other than Seibold had planned a later release of the book, but that he recently moved up the publication, as did Simon & Shuster, the publisher of Walter Isaacson’s Steve Jobs bio.

The piece then includes a number of famous quotes from the former Apple CEO, such as one from a D5 Conference (All Things Digital) in 2007, when Jobs said: "We make tools for people. Tools to create, tools to communicate. The age we're living in, these tools surprise you. … That's why I love what we do. Because we make these tools, and we're constantly surprised with what people do with them."

Jobs has always been vocal about his company’s ultimate goal of simply making great stuff, and he probably never voiced it better than in February 2008 when, according to CNN Money’s Fortune magazine, he said: "We do no market research. We don't hire consultants. … We just want to make great products."

A quote from February 1996 when Jobs pinpointed competition’s lack of innovation is also given.

According to Wired magazine, Jobs blamed their failures on not having a very diverse experience, noting that “The broader one's understanding of the human experience, the better design we will have.

How to Print in OS X 10.7 Lion

Solution to Print in OS X 10.7 Lion

Apple has issued a Support note on how to print in OS X Lion, the latest version of the company’s Mac operating system. Aspects described range from setting up a printer to sharing a printer queue, and more.

Support document HT4670, titled ‘OS X Lion: Overview of printing’ has the purpose of teaching Mac users how to use the printing functions of OS X 10.7. The instructions apply to any version of OS  X Lion.

The list of topics covered is provided as follows. Each section is expandable, with each one containing a wealth of information complete with imagery.

- Start a print job on the Mac and manage its options
- Generate and manage PDFs
- Manage the printer queue and printer dock icon
- Share the printer queue
- About graphic resolutions for inkjet and laser printers

For example, Apple tells users that, in order to start a print job, they will simply have to choose choose File > Print… from any application that can print or press ⌘P (Command-P), at which point OS X will pop up a print sheet.

A sample basic print sheet showing standard details of the print job is displayed above (click to enlarge).

Apple informs customers that their computer will “either have the necessary printing software already installed, or it will automatically download and install software when the printer is connected or configured.”

The company advises users against installing software that came with the printer, as it may be out of date.

Also, users must not connect the printer to their Mac until they make sure everything is set, both software- and hardware-wise.

“Follow the instructions that came with the printer to unpack, install ink or toner, and insert paper. Finally, use the instructions in this article to connect the printer to your Mac,” says the company.

Customers must ensure their printer is listed in Printer and scanner software for OS X Lion.

NASA SATELLITE THE SIZE OF BUS ‘COULD LAND ALMOST ANYWHERE’

Nasa and the US Department of Defense are tracking a 35ft spacecraft, the Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite, or (UARS), as it heads towards a universe during 5 miles per second.

Experts contend there is a one-in-3,200 risk of a space junk, which weighs 6 tons, attack someone.
However, a speed equates to which there will usually be a 20-minute notice prior to it strikes.
Debris is approaching to separate opposite a 500-mile area, with a greatest cube weighing 300lb, a weight of a vast refrigerator.
The expected alighting area spans cities as distant north as Edinburgh and as distant south as Cape Horn, upon a southern seashore of South America.

NASA spokespeople have stressed which a risk to tellurian hold up and skill from UARS is small.
They bring a statistic which in 50 years of space scrutiny no a single has ever been harm by descending space junk, whilst they claimed which people were many more expected to be fatally struck by lightning.
Mark Matney, an orbital waste scientist during NASA, said: “We know it is starting to strike somewhere in between 57 north embodiment and 57 south latitude, which covers many of a inhabited universe unfortunately.”
The greatest square of space waste to tumble from circuit was America’s 75-ton Skylab which strike Earth in 1979.
UARS was launched in 1991 to magnitude the ozone layer, wind and temperature. It was strictly decommissioned in 2005.
It is a greatest NASA booster to “come back” in 3 decades, after Skylab fell in horse opera Australia though Mr Matney pronounced similar-sized pieces of outlayed space station and satellite waste tumble to Earth about once per year.
US Strategic Command’s Joint Space Operations Center is “keeping everybody – not only NASA though all a sovereign agencies which understanding with open reserve issues – sensitive about where it is and predictions of where it’s coming,” a mouthpiece said.
NASA has warned people not to hold a waste if they come opposite it since it is expected to have pointy edges.

Download Linux Mint Debian Edition 201109 with Gnome and Xfce

Linux Mint has announced the release of its latest update to the "Debian Edition" of the popular and user friendly Linux distro. Linux Mint Debian Edition 201109 is now available in both Gnome and Xfce flavors.

ISOs for both desktop environments are available, if you want to give the Debian version of Linux Mint a try.

But if you already have it installed on your system, all of the changes and updated packages should already be installed, provided you've been keeping up with the updates.

"The team is proud to announce the release of LMDE 201109 with updated ISOs for Gnome and Xfce," the announcement read.

Here's a brief overview of what's new in Linux Mint Debian Edition 201109:

· All Linux Mint 11 features;
· Installer improvements (keyboard variants, locale, bug fixes, UUID in fstab);
· Update Packs, dedicated Update Manager and staged repositories;
· GTK2/GTK3 theme compatibility;
· Updated software and packages.

Linux Mint Debian Edition 201109 makes the jump to the Linux 3.0 kernel. With that comes a caveat for 32-bit users. The default kernel in the 32-bit ISOs, for compatibility reasons, is the 486 kernel.

This ensures that LMDE runs on a all but the most ancient computers, but it also means that multi-core processors won't be recognized.

So, if you have a multi-core processor, or multiple processors on your system, switch to the 686-PAE version of the kernel, available in the repositories.

Linux Mint Debian Edition aims to replicate all of Linux Mint's strengths and features while using a Debian base, rather than Ubuntu like the regular Linux Mint. There are advantages and disadvantages to this approach.

On the one hand, Debian provides a cleaner and lighter environment as well as a more 'traditional' Linux experience (which can be both a good thing and a bad thing).

On the other, there are more rough edges and you probably need more experience with Linux to get the most out of the Debian Edition. Once you put in a little effort to get it looking and running just the way you like it, it will be worth it though.

uTorrent Used by Half of BitTorrent File-Sharers, Top 6 BitTorrent Clients on the Web

The latest data from the BitTorrent world shows a more diverse cast of BitTorrent clients dividing up the market, though there are still only a few clients battling for position.

Surprising no one, uTorrent is on top of the pile, with almost half of BitTorrent file-sharers running it.

The BitTorrent-focused blog TorrentFreak, with the help of the Tribler P2P research team at Delft University of Technology, put together a picture of the BitTorrent landscape.

Using a batch of 557,536 unique peers, the team looked at what BitTorrent client each of them were using. Almost half, 48 percent, of them were running uTorrent.

The popularity of the lightweight BitTorrent client is no secret, uTorrent recently passed the 100 million users mark.

Coming in at number two, no big surprise here either apart maybe from its growing market share, is Vuze with 22.49 percent usage, 125,417 peers.

Vuze is followed by the BitTorrent Mainline client, which is essentially a rebranded uTorrent, apart from the Linux version, with 13 percent of those in the study using it.

Transmission, the open-source BitTorrent client for Linux and Mac makes a somewhat surprising entry at number four, being used by 7 percent of file-sharers in the study.

Moving down the list, Libtorrent ran on the computers of 1.02 percent of the users, while BitComent, the once popular client, managed to get only 1.01 percentmarket share.

All other BitTorrent clients put together only added up to 1.27 percent of use, however, it was impossible to determine the client used by 6.22 percent of those in the study.

All-in-all, the picture is clear, uTorrent dominates and it shows no signs of losing any strength. The only real competitor is Vuze. Transmission could put up a good fight, but it's not available on Windows, greatly reducing its potential user base.

The new application release brings along a quite useful feature, one that was already made available for the owners of other devices, namely message delivery notifications.

The new feature is available for all BlackBerry users out there who have the application installed on their devices, the development team explains.

Basically, this includes the latest handset from RIM as well, that which landed on shelves last month with the new BlackBerry 7 OS on board.

Message delivery notifications in Nimbuzz 1.3.7 for Blackberry work in a simple manner, the company explains:
1 check mark (?) when your message was successfully delivered to the Nimbuzz servers
2 check marks(??) when your message was successfully delivered to the person you are chatting with.

Please note this does not indicate that your chat was read by the other person but only delivered.

At the same time the new application release brings along a useful shortcut, aimed at making the 'Nimbuzzing experience' far more pleasant than before, namely fast scrolling.

What users will have to do to benefit from this feature would be to hold the “Alt” key while browsing up and down in their contact list.

“Lastly, we will be thrilled to find out that the new version is fully compatible with BlackBerry devices running on the new OS7,” Nimbuzz explains.

Whether it comes to installing the application on the new BlackBerry Torch 9810 or on Torch 9850/9860, on the BlackBerry Bold 9900/9930, or even on the new BlackBerry Curve 9350/9360/9370, users will enjoy full support for it.

“We hope you will enjoy the new features and if you have any questions or suggestions please let us know,” the development team also notes.

AMD Benches FX-Series Bulldozer Against Intel CPUs

At the same time with Intel's IDF, AMD is hosting its own press event meant to showcase the company's latest technologies and chips, and one of the most interesting demonstrations to take place over there is a comparison between a yet-unreleased FX-Series processor and some Intel Core CPUs.

AMD hasn't disclosed the specs of the Bulldozer processor that is used for this comparison, but two different scenarios are being shown to demonstrate the power of its chips. AMD,CPU,Bulldozer,FX-Series,Benchmarks, Intel CPUs, overclock
The first one of these pits an eight-core AMD FX processor against an unspecified Intel Core i5 Sandy Bridge CPU, both systems running Handbrake to convert a 5-minute H.264 video in SD resolution.

According to Hardware Info, the Bulldozer chip performs this task with an average of 223 frames per second, while the Core i5 machine gets 188 fps.

Both systems will be comparable in price according to AMD, but one can't help but notice that Bulldozer requires twice the numbers of cores of Intel to surpass a Core i5 by just 20% in a multi-threaded benchmark like Handbrake.

The second scenario has the same FX-Series processor fighting against a Core i7 980X in Dirt 3 at a 2560x1600 resolution, both systems featuring two Radeon HD 6790 cards setup in CrossFire. The Intel machine finishes this benchmark with an average frame rate of 80.9 fps, while the much cheaper AMD desktop averaged 82.8 fps.

Despite the good result achieved by AMD, the selection of the graphics cards, the high resolution and the small difference between the two systems cast a shadow of a doubt over AMD's win, as the 2fps gain could also be caused by other factors, such as better CrossFire scaling on the 990FX board.

AMD hasn't made any official statements over the launch date of the first FX-Series processors other than saying these will arrive in Q4 of 2011. However, most rumors seem to point out to an October release.

Download Age of Empires III Version 1.0.6 for Mac OS X

A new patch specifically targeting Mac gamers has been released for Age of Empires III, the third installment in the popular real-time-strategy (RTS) franchise, portraying the colonization of the Americas by the Europeans.

The Mac version of Age of Empires III, released on November 21, 2006 in North America and on September 29, 2006 in Europe, was ported over to the Mac and developed by Destineer's MacSoft Games. It was published in tandem by Destineer and MacSoft Games.

Age of Empires III has made a number of innovations in the series, most notably the addition of the "Home City," which combines real-time strategy and role-playing game (RPG) features.

Since its launch in 2006, two expansion packs have been released for Age of Empires III - The WarChiefs (released on October 17, 2006), which introduced three Native American civilizations; and The Asian Dynasties (released on October 23, 2007), which included three Asian civilizations.

According to Destineer Games, Age of Empires III patch 1.0.6 will update all previous versions of Mac Age of Empires III to that version.

The updater is for the U.S. (ie, English) retail version of Age of Empires III only.

Gamers are to note that updates for expansion packs will need to be downloaded and applied separately.

According to Destineer, the following changes have been made to Age of Empires III for Mac OS X and Windows:

· Re-wrote the MP3 playback system in order to be compatible with Mac OS X 10.7 Lion.
· Increased the application’s base system requirement to Mac OS X 10.5.6 or later.

Mac OS X Version of League Of Legends Officially Scrubbed

Riot Games is “regretfully” canceling the League of Legends Mac beta client developed in partnership with TransGaming, citing issues with maintaining consistent parity between Mac and Windows PC versions in a rapid update cycle.

Announced last year, League of Legends is regarded as a DOTA clone - an action RTS video game which challenges rival teams to destroy the opponent’s Nexus, or have them surrender. League of Legends is a session-based game in which matchmaking occurs based on the average Elo ratings of each individual players, with slight proprietary adjustments.

The game boasts five different modes: tutorial, custom, Co-Op vs. AI, normal and ranked.

In a forum post, the folks at Riot Games explain their decision to cut short the life of the proposed Mac client, saying, “Over the past 13 months we have been working with another company on a Mac version of LoL.”

“We have been silent because both companies have been exploring every possible avenue to ensure the Mac version is up to Riot standards. So far we have been unable to ensure a consistent quality bar across platforms.”

Noting that their rapid update cycle is at the heart of the issue, the game developer announces, “We are regretfully going to shut down the Mac Beta client indefinitely starting 12:00 AM PT on September 6, 2011.”

The studio promises to “continue to investigate the opportunity to provide player access on the Mac Platform in the future” but only when that opportunity “aligns with [their] service and content update standards.”

Testers that have accessed and used the League of Legends store during the Beta can either continue to play the Windows version of the game, or ask for a full refund.

Riot will also compensate active beta participants with a code that unlocks the Champions Pack, “as a token of appreciation for the time they have dedicated to helping us evaluate the Mac client and our sincere apology for not being able to have the testing work out as originally planned,” Riot states.

Today is the last day testers can login to the Mac client and click on the Store button to get their reward.

“Rewards will be added to the accounts of verified testers by the end of September,” Riot adds.

Apple Starts Offering OS X 10.7.2 Lion to AppleSeed Testers

Through its AppleSeed Software Customer Seeding program, Apple is rolling out the latest version of OS X Lion to regular testers, not just developers, in an attempt to iron out any potential bugs ahead of the company’s fall multi-software-release, which includes iCloud, iOS 5 and, of course, the unreleased OS X 10.7.2.

A program where customers are invited to test pre-release software, Apple Software Customer Seeding has the main goal of providing Apple Software Engineering with real-world quality and usability feedback.

The program gives testers a first glimpse at new and upcoming Apple software. What testers submit as feedback is then used by the Cupertino tech giant to make improvements.

An ‘OS X Lion Software Update Invitation’ has now been sent to select Apple customers, these people report, with the company saying “Apple invites you to participate in a software seeding project.”

“Our program, Apple Software Customer Seeding, provides customers with access to pre-release software so that they may explore new features, perform early compatibility testing, and submit feedback to Apple engineers.”

The company adds, “We have selected you, based on a referral and/or prior participation in our program, to assist us in testing an upcoming release of an OS X Lion Software Update.”

Selected testers will be required to have a Macintosh computer that already runs OS X Lion, either the initial version (10.7 build 11A511) or the incremented version (10.7.1 build 11B26).

Testers are not only given the opportunity to download OS X 10.7.2, but they’re also provided with the necessary directions to install and properly test out the software.

It is important to note that if you’ve been selected as a tester, your use of this pre-release software is strictly confidential.

According to the company formerly run by Steve Jobs, “all potential participants are required to sign a Customer Seed And Confidentiality Agreement before being accepted into the program.”

Parallels Desktop 7 for Mac Now Available to General Population
Parallels Inc. has publicly released the latest version of their powerful virtualization solution for Mac users, Parallels Desktop 7 for Mac. The new version is now available for $79.99 as standard, whereas existing customers (of version5 or 6) can upgrade for $49.99.

Finally, in Parallels Desktop 7 you get a little something called “Windows on Demand”.

What this feature does is it lets you purchase and automatically install Windows on your Mac right from Parallels Desktop 7. This option is limited to US residents.

How To Install Mac OS X Lion In VMware or Virtualbox on PC?

Probably this is the first complete and working guide available on internet to install Mac OS X 10.7 Lion on VMware in Windows 7 Intel PC. After several days of searches, attempts, reading and collecting information from different places, I managed to install latest Mac OS X Lion 10.7 on my Intel Core2duo computer with VMware workstation in Windows 7.

This method should work in VMware Player also, but I prefer workstation because of Snapshot feature. I don’t think you would face any issues on other types of Intel processors, but make sure you have Hardware Virtualization Technology (VT), 64 Bit, and Core2duo or later supported processor. I’m not sure about AMD processor users. Someone please try and update in comments area for AMD processor with Lion on VMware.

What You Need?

  1. VMware workstation 7
  2. Lion OS X bootable VMDK file created from original installation medium (DVD or ISO file) – Check this guide and make this bootable image as described.
  3. Additional Files (Click here to download) – Its a zipped file from two sets of files and a darwin.iso file.
One for patch your VMware software to support Mac OS X server guest ( Original Source), second one with pre configured Virtual machine files (Original source) and darwin.iso file to install VMware tools on guest to get more screen resolutions and VMware shared folders.
  4. Check the VT in your host BIOS as shown here with some tools.
  5. Just little bit time to read the complete guide :)
